The Premier League gives the least amount of game time to U21 players out of the five big European leagues, a new study by the CIES Football Observatory has revealed.
Players born in 1994 or later were only on the pitch for 5.3 percent of the total game time in the Premier League 2014-2015 season.
The lowest average percentage on the list, England’s top flight lags way behind France’s Ligue Un, who lead the way with 12.1 percent.
This high figure might explain France’s recent success at youth level internationally recently, having won the U17 European Championships last week and the U20 World Cup last year.
Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Everton and Manchester United were the only Premier League teams to average more than 10 percent in the study.
Sunderland and Stoke apparently didn’t give one U21 player a minute of football in their season, while Real Madrid only 0.1 percent of football to U21 players.
Barcelona weren’t much further ahead with 1.6 percent, while Juventus allocated 1.5 percent and Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich gave only 4.5 percent.
Monaco gave a continental-topping 34.6 percent of minutes to youngsters while Lyon weren’t far behind with 31.2 percent. Both qualified for the Champions League.
